We all adore surprises, and Valentine’s Day is the one occasion where Romeos come out in full force, and Juliets shyly receive their partner’s token of affection. Think the big act is done once you’ve placed the flower order? No it isn’t – because it all depends on how you store the fresh bouquet before it reaches the hands of your darling maiden….

1. Best Storage Place

Ask any florist and they’ll tell you plants are sensitive to temperatures, which explains why certain flowers need to stay in floral coolers, to ensure the maximum vase life possible. Once they are out in your hands, these blooms start to suffer from dehydration damage, so it’s best to look for storage in the house with as low a humidity as possible.

As a general rule of thumb, keep your bouquet away from hot spots or areas with hot and cold drafts. Flowers lose lesser water at cool temperatures, so move them to the refrigerator (but avoid putting with fruits) or into the air-conditioned room with you.

2. Drink Up

Ever seen the bottom of flower stems encased in cotton swabbed with water, and then secured in foil? Once removed from their water source, stems run the risk of air moving rapidly in and plugging the cells. So make sure to water or lightly mist daily, and add some flower preserve if you are keeping for a longer time frame, before passing the bouquet over!

3. Transportation

Are you collecting from the florist personally? Remember that the florist’s van would have all the equipment necessary to keep flowers secured and fresh, while your car might not. So do factor in a crate or some form of support to hold your bouquet upright as you drive. Another tip: slide the passenger seat all the way back so you can place the flowers on the floor, to avoid direct contact with the AC as well as for you to keep an eye on.
